Afflicted by the vague desire for something to happen—without ever imagining we could make it happen ourselves—we were rescued by the bland homogeneity of the internet, finding refuge among friends we never see, whose entire existence is a series of exclamations and silly pictures, whose only discourse is the gossip of commodities. I am thinking of investing in a machine, a sort of mimeograph machine which enables one to make innumerable copies from an original typewritten sheet in any colored ink one wants. I have been wondering if, instead of a magazine, with all the difficulties it entails, we could not do better by bringing out one thing at a time, after this process. We could put a thin paper cover around it with the title printed on it—by the same process—or else each one separately, in Chinese ink or something like that. We would send the thing to a select list of people who we think might be interested. Put no price on it, but suggest that they pay what they like towards the expense, if it appeals to them. I haven't solved all the technical problems yet, nor have I the dough...

ECCOLINGUISTICS is actively seeking contributions and free subscriptions to its second issue, to be printed and distributed in a batch of 200 as 2012 approaches. The second issue aims to celebrate a profound transition apparently accompanying that year—the ending of the 13^th b'ak'tun.

What this new beginning means, no one knows. Perhaps we earthlings are currently undergoing its transition.

ECCOLINGUISTICS is not beholden to any poetic or fictional or generational systems of ethics, aesthetics, ideology, thought, schools, morality. As a work in progress, it is responsive to whatever happens to arrive as a potential contribution, to working around them, situating an array of views and voices in forced dialogue with each other. It seeks to represent the conversations taking place at its point in time. It seeks to receive them, so that it might imagine what could be.

As an organism, from the plural to an interstice, an emergency, singular—fascia, bound to its cells—the one communal many.

ECCOLINGUISTICS does recognize a certain contemporary movement within poetic communities toward the need and desire for sincere literary projects affirming the individual as a worthwhile concept—the vulnerable individual who deserves another's empathy, support, and celebration. But it seeks something larger, more binding, than any one. It looks down, around, and up, recognizing the wonder to be found there.

To wit, as a work in progress, it seeks its own discomfiture, to actually decognize and see, the movement is outward and inward knowing, perhaps, what it won't escape, finding nothing to that (and as little in it). It wants the impossible—transcendent reclamation that obeys its own underlying catastrophe—affirming of all things considered—a more livable place, without "us" at the center of it. It wants the impossible.

The entire human organism—all genomes and phenomes—biologic and artistic—are invited to contribute:

The battery's charged; the sky doesn't work. It's initial-stage phenotype will be a mailing. It will communicate with you as to what that means. From the outside looking in, it could evolve into something more, perhaps morph—it could be programmed already. It is perhaps a point in its favor. Something organic, bio-logic and chemically based, autotrophic, creating its first meal. The first mailing, and all subsequent mailings, will be free. On paper. If you would like to send material, please do. Contributors to each issue, or at least this first issue, should be willing to allow that material to be selectively used as these pieces come together. Contributors will have the opportunity to decline the page's use of the work and everything will be credited to the authors. Because this thing is free, the editor(s) will do their best to respond to everything, and will do their best to keep every single promise. We are also hoping that the price of nothing will encourage many subscriptions. That is, if you trust us.

Or still another way to put it—what we're up to will more recognizably find shape as materials arrive—it's an operative principle of ECCOLINGUISTICS—we advocate no mission or school. We will distribute through the mail free thought and art to at least 200 readers. Each issue will be small, necessarily so, and no frills, pleasure and readable, equally necessary, digestible in an hour with a tight conceptual arc. The approach is to wallow in the basics—words on the page. We are looking for work that isn't stifled, that has actually opened it's mouth. There will be an attentive, inclusive, and imaginative selection process that will invite, though in no way require, collaboration.

We are here for you, the reader. Please send your work, genre is not an issue (polemics and criticism will be welcome), subscribe (did I say it's FREE?), and pass along to anyone potentially interested the good or bad news. Its price and tangibility (it can be held in the hand) will mean the work of contributors will be read by more readers than happens with many, though by no means all, other costly print publications.

In some ways, ECCOLINGUISTICS is an experiment, and certainly one that's been tried before, and is currently happening elsewhere, in the viral distribution of engaging writing that is not possible with costly production. It will arrive unannounced at your home; you will have done hardly nothing. It will hang around your home and, for a while, probably not be drowned out. It will spread your writing. This is our gimmick.
